He\u2019s overwhelmed. It\u2019s his third week in Year 7.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve all seen it &#8211; the pupil who starts secondary school already shrinking into themselves. They were bright, chatty, engaged in Year 6. But by the time September ends, they\u2019ve gone quiet. Their confidence has dipped. Their attendance is wobbling. They\u2019re not behind in ability\u2026 just behind in belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We shrug.<strong><br><\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong><em>&#8220;Year 7 is always a bit wobbly.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what if that wobble isn\u2019t just a phase?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if it\u2019s the first sign of a deeper slide?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Dip<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, just after the transition from primary to secondary school, we see the same pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Attainment falls<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engagement drops<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confidence fades<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Behaviour worsens<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And all of this happens before many pupils have even found their place. They\u2019re still navigating new corridors, new routines, unfamiliar systems &#8211; and often doing it <strong>without enough support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve come to accept this pattern as part of the journey.<br><br>We normalise it. We absorb it into our expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here&#8217;s the uncomfortable truth:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The impact of a poor start doesn\u2019t stay in Year 7 &#8211; it follows them for years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What begins as a crisis of confidence can quickly become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chronic disengagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated behaviour incidents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Permanent exclusion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And beyond that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased risk of long-term poverty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater vulnerability to crime and exploitation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t start with criminality.<br><br>It starts with being unsure who to sit with at lunch. With not knowing what the joke is. With feeling invisible, unheard, unsafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Let\u2019s be clear: this isn\u2019t a question of pupil ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s a gap in readiness, resilience, and routine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a symptom of what we don\u2019t prepare them for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emotional transitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social belonging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigating complexity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asking for help<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We throw them into secondary with a timetable and a uniform and hope they\u2019ll adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <strong>hope isn\u2019t a strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\u201cHe\u2019s Not Behind in Ability. He\u2019s Behind in Belonging.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signs are subtle at first.<br><br>He walks slower. Talks less. Avoids eye contact.<br><br>The work isn\u2019t too hard &#8211; he just doesn\u2019t get to it.<br><br>He\u2019s scanning the room, not for answers, but for <strong>permission to belong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This<\/strong> is the moment to intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not with punishment. Not with panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with <strong>preparation<\/strong>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>That\u2019s Why We Created XLR8<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>XLR8<\/strong> is our co-funded, mentor-led summer transition programme for vulnerable Year 6 pupils. It takes place <strong>before<\/strong> they start secondary school &#8211; when it matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A space to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Build confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn systems and routines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet other pupils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find their voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand what\u2019s coming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel seen before they walk through the gates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because when a child feels safe, supported, and expected to belong, everything changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know what works.
